It is a quite small instrument with a single drone, which is attached horizontally on the side of the bagpipe player. The player here was (we presume he is now deceased) one of the best in the region, Jovan Paunovic,from the Vlach village of Plavna. His repertoire included more than forty melodies, for ritual or dance, and music for festivities. His playing was rich in ornament and harmony. Dor, doruţule: “Sadness, longing” This was music belonging to the ritual of the Pomană, the commemoration of the dead, which took place at precise times after the death (one week, one month, six months, one year, ten years) with a banquet, the distribution of gifts to the poor and the dancing of a round (in Vlach uară, in Serbian kolo) played in memory of the deceased. The dance leader carried around his neck a portrait of the dead person and in his hand a mirror. The deceased was supposed to be attracted by his image (real and reflected) and to participate in the round: it represented a link between death and life, between the dead and the living. If it was danced on or between the tombs, this was as a means of ensuring the participation of the dead people in the community.
